All About Barcode Scanners

Barcode scanners are devices that can read and decode the data stored in a barcode. These innovative electronic devices simplify the process of data capturing and identification, allowing businesses to operate more efficiently.

Barcode scanners have a wide range of applications, such as.

  • Retail: To capture product information during checkouts and improve the accuracy of inventory tracking
  • Manufacturing: To integrate with warehouse management systems for efficient order fulfilment and material tracking
  • Warehousing: For identifying products and tracking inventory and assets
  • Transportation and Logistics: For shipment tracking
  • Healthcare: To track medical supplies and access patient information
  • Libraries: To track books and other library materials
  • Travel: To verify and track passengers and baggage

How Does a Barcode Scanner Work?

Barcode scanners work on the basic principles of light reflection and absorption.

A barcode scanner has a built-in light source, typically a laser, which is shone on the barcode. The barcode absorbs some light and reflects the rest back to the scanner. This reflected light is then picked up by a photoelectric sensor, which detects the different patterns of light and dark bars in the barcode.

Once the reflected light is captured, it is sent to a decoder that reads the data encoded in the barcode and converts it into a readable format. The decoder then sends this information to the computer or other device connected to the scanner for further processing.

Mobile Terminals

Mobile Terminals, also called Mobile Computers barcode scanners, are handheld devices that combine barcode scanning with the features of a mobile computer. These devices are lightweight and ergonomic, making them easier to carry and handle.

Mobile Terminals run on either Windows or Android operating systems. They have built-in large memory capacity (RAM and flash memory), powerful processors, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology, and advanced barcode reading capabilities. Mobile Terminals also feature a touchscreen display and an integrated keyboard to facilitate data entry and documentation.

Mobile Terminals are designed with a focus on toughness. They have robust bodies made of reinforced plastic or metal with sturdy housing and rubber grips and bumpers for added durability. These devices come with Ingress Protection (IP) ratings, tumble ratings and certified drop tests, which make them ideal for tough working environments and outdoor applications.

Utilising a Mobile Barcode Scanning Terminal either in hand or attached to a forklift or other vehicle, employees can access a vast range of pertinent information, applications and services while on the move. The outcome? Enhanced effectiveness through mobility, getting the job done more effectively in less time.

General Barcode Scanners

General barcode scanners are devices that quickly and accurately scan barcodes. They come with features like fast scan speed, ergonomic design, and long-range scanning, making them reliable for various purposes.

General-purpose barcode scanners help employees streamline reading multiple barcodes at once, enabling them to work faster and far more efficiently. Any task from retail point of sale systems to backroom inventory is greatly enhanced by utilising this category of barcode scanners.

General scanners are not built to endure rough handling beyond minor events like accidental drops, limiting their ability to function in high-intensity environments. However, these devices are still appropriate for low-intensity environments, such as convenience stores, hardware shops, bottle shops, and general stores.

Check out Triton’s general barcode scanner homepage for our full range of general-purpose barcode scanners.

Rugged Barcode Scanners

Rugged barcode scanners are scanners that have the same features as general barcode scanners but with added design characteristics of resilience and toughness. They are built using high-grade materials like reinforced plastics and metal.

Rugged barcode scanners have protective bumpers, rubber frames, and resistant casings or coatings for extra protection. They come with IP ratings, tumble test certification, drop-impact tests and other certifications that enhance their durability. With such features, rugged scanners are suitable for tough working environments like warehouses, factories and freight transport.

2D Barcode Scanners

2D barcode scanners are devices that are designed to scan both two-dimensional barcodes and traditional 1D barcodes. These scanners come with the same features as general barcode scanners but with added functionality to read 2D barcodes. 2D barcode scanners are also available in rugged models.

2D barcode scanners are suitable for almost any industry, as they can process a variety of high-density codes like QR codes, Aztec codes, Maxicode, Data Matrix codes and PDF417. These scanners are best suited for the healthcare, logistics, and travel industries.

USB Barcode Scanners

Universal Serial Bus (USB) barcode scanners are a type of wired barcode scanners that connect to a host device (like a computer) via a USB port. These scanner devices rely on USB connections for power supply and transferring barcoded information.

USB barcode scanners do not have an onboard processor or memory and, therefore, always require a host device to perform their scanning and decoding functions. These devices are designed for a simple plug-and-play experience and require minimal setup efforts.

USB scanners are a cost-effective option that delivers the same top-notch performance as wireless scanners. They are ideal for retail and warehouse settings and used for inventory tracking and management, point-of-sale applications, order entry and tracking, and other such tasks.

Triton’s USB barcode scanner homepage showcases a range of powerful and reliable USB barcode scanners at competitive prices.

Wireless Barcode Scanners

Wireless barcode scanners are a type of barcode scanner that uses radio frequency like WiFi or Bluetooth to wirelessly send barcode information from the scanner device to the host device. These scanners have built-in rechargeable batteries that power the device and send the decoded data from one point to another.

A wireless barcode scanner can communicate with its host device in two ways.

  • Directly with the host device (such as a computer or cash register) (direct connectivity)
  • Via a charging dock or base station (indirect connectivity)

Wireless scanners are best suited for applications where mobility is required, such as in warehouses, medical facilities, libraries, and retail stores.
